Dr. Johannes Poigenfürst

(born Vienna, March 19, 1929) is a Austrian accident surgeon.
He studied in Vienna and completed his specialist training 1955 to 1962 in Vienna, Berlin, Sweden and England,
and in 1967 and 1968 in New York.
Since 1983 Poigenfürst is university professor.
Since 1984 he is director of the Accident Surgery Department at the Lorenz Boehler hospital in Vienna.
He is co-editor of the magazines "Aktuelle Traumatologie" and "Unfallchirurgie".
In 1993 Poigenfürst initiated the building of a hospital for accident cases in Temesvar, Romania - the "Casa Austria".
In 1994 he initiated a public debate over the working conditions in Austrian hospitals.
In 2001 Poigenfürst was awarded the renowned "Kardinal König Prize".
